A day of remembrances...

A moment of silence, and remembrances of the victims...

In that vein, allow me to take up where I left off yesterday:

The big picture, the political picture, it's still the culture. A culture of relativism, hedonism and glorifying sado-masochism and death is promoted by the whole Entertainment/Media/Academia lie factory almost non-stop. To explain the context within which this killer committed his heinous acts is not to excuse him. Seeking some understanding is natural and necessary, and we have two levels on which to do that: the political and the personal. (Only socialists dare to say that the "personal is political"!)

But to continue on a more personal level...

I want to add a more fundamental point, something that I often try to recall to myself, that relates to our belief in Providence and in our supernatural destiny as human beings. I would like to shift from the political dimensions (social) to the ethical (personal) dimensions of what this tragedy can teach us in our "pursuit of happiness" in life.

Suffering and death are parts of life, obviously, but the hard part is to remember that they are not the worst things that can happen to us. They are inevitable. Trying inordinately to flee them is responsible for much of the actual evil in the world, and all of the socialism.

Suffering and death are "evils" only to the extent that they represent the reality of our imperfect condition in this world. Reflecting on suffering and death should remind us of our perfect origins, our calling to perfection and holiness in this life, and our hopes for perfection in the next.

Reflecting on suffering and death should bring out the best in us. It should remind us of the sanctity, and fragility, of all life.

The worst thing that can happen in any one person's life is that we don't do the good that we have the opporutnity of doing, or that we don't do the good we should do as well as we could do it, or that we end up doing something actually evil in the name of some other misguided good such as money or power or pleasure or longevity--all transitory and corrupt places to put ones hope.

When the pursuit of happiness equals the flight from suffering and death, the frantic search to escape from our nature, then all forms of unnatural and unhappy behaviors result. In short, disordered living and disordered thinking, driven mainly by fear and vain hopes, (looking for love in all the wrong places?) go hand in hand.

"Whatsoever you do to the least of these, that you do unto me!"

Keep it simple, the truth is simple. Let this tragedy in Virginia, and all of our personal sufferings and tragedies, remind us to do the good that we have the opportunity to do, to love our neighbor above all that is right in front of us.

Charity--love, sweetness, light, goodness, life and happiness--does indeed begin at home.

All the best,
D. Ox

And now, I believe, Stik-n-stein has a related point to make...
