Girl Power! Christmas is about Mary, too... Dumb Ox News Embargo Continuing...
Who can stand reading the news, beyond the headlines here at Dumb Ox, that is? Updated, nonetheless...
Saddam to be justly executed, and Libs all worked up about how far we've become just like him... yeah, right. The usual moral equivalency utopian bleck. You couldn't pay me to link to the Daily KOS moral midgets. Well, maybe. Then there's the ubiquitous Vatican "official" going around condemning the thing. Earth to Vatican "official": the death penalty is only not justifiable in Catholic doctrine when there are adequate and safe alternatives for the protection of society, and this is not the case. Duh.
Saddam did indeed receive the wages of his sins today... Yes there are other murderous dictators around, yes we were once allied with him, yes U.S. policy is in part responsible for his atrocities, but yes he not only deserved to be executed as a matter of justice, he also needed to be executed as a matter of the government's duty to Iraqi society. If he were kept in jail, he would have been the source of perpetual agitation and violence, and his supporters (i.e. leeches off of the Baathist regime) would never give up their hope of returning to tyrannical parasitism. Saddam lived like a thug, made it to the top (like his socialist heroes, Stalin and Hitler), and died a tyrant's death. Our only prayer is that his passing will open a new chapter of political consolidation in Iraq.
The Breck Girl, John Edwards, announcing another jog for the Presidency, from "Katrina-(i.e. Bush, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)-ravaged New Orleans" of all places! Katrina has now officially entered Left Looney-dom's Pantheon of Rich, White, Republican EVIL-isms up there with McCarthyism, Watergate-ism, and Bush=Hitler-isms. Oh, brother, how pathetic the angry, rich, white, Left is.
And poor Gerald Ford can't get a moment's peace, even in death! Bobbie Woodward releases a tape of the more-than-octagenarian's comments on his reservations about the Iraq war-- primarily over the approach to explaining the justification of the war to the public and its eventual timing! Secondly he made a general observation that the U.S. can't go around the world freeing people without clear national interests at stake. Double Duh. Will the MSM ever get tired of twisting and spinning? The poor man was not exactly in the loop at the war room! And his observations are perfectly legitimate considerations, even while people in the know prudently came to other conclusions. The MSM is a busy little beaver rehabilitating their hatred of "the man who pardoned Nixon" to set him up as a Buddha on foreign and military affairs in order to condemn that evil man Bush! Laughable. Poor Gerry got "Reaganed"!
So let's forget all that and think about some things that really matter...
I haven't yet seen "The Nativity Story" -- apparently neither have many others -- but we hope to catch it this week. It's hard to sell such a well-known and well-depicted event from the life of Jesus. Ever since the 12th century, when so many popular religious devotions flourished, the nativity of the Lord has been a favorite subject of pious prayer and meditation... much like the subsequent passion of our Lord. The Christmas story is as much about Mary, in many ways, as it is about Jesus...
After all, Mary was an unwed mother at a time when such things could lead to being stoned to death. Her acceptance of God's will involved saying "yes" to possible humiliation and death, and to a life of sacrifice, worry and suffering. The days after Christmas are an opportune moment to reflect on Mary's role in salvation history, on her model of sacrifice and acceptance. Girl power, indeed!
Here are some of my favorite nativity scenes...
Botticelli's is full of angels and symbolism... tending towards confusion as he does, but the central story is as simple as can be.

Giotto's is imbued with gentle and spiritual, but very realistic, tenderness, with the angels seeming to be both rejoicing and pleading, while Joseph sits nearby, exhausted!

I've gotten ahead of myself with this Breugel "Adoration" but I just love this one, as it shows the human, all too human, looking and thinking of the folks around... and even Mary is not idealized; goodness gracious, imagine the circumstances!

La Tour's really captures the moment when things had settled down after the birth, and they all sat around the baby in awe...and trepidation.

This miniature I find neat because of the surrounding dragon-devil, looking vicious as a Liberal at God come into the world to redeem it, and who is not Marx, Darwin, Freud, or any of their other earthly idols!

And, finally, this "Adoration" also is ahead of schedule, but I wanted to add it since it goes right to the point, so to speak, as Bonfigli represents the future of the child, for this was he born, and Mary's stoic expression...

Peace!
