Support for Israel from the Italian left? With well-founded charges of European cowardice and duplicity on support for Israel, the Communist paper "Avanti" offers a suggestion: make Israel part of the European Union. We wonder: how about some commitment to right over wrong first?

Commentary:

As we have been pointing out in our recent articles, events in the Middle East are proceeding according to plans made long ago, even before 9/11 and perhaps before the First Gulf War.

Point One: Just imagine the same scenario today, with attacks on Israel from Hamas and Hezbollah reaching an intolerable level, with Israel being forced to defend itself, IF Saddam Houssein was still in control of Iraq. Splitting Syria off of a potential armed bloc with Iraq, and isolating Iran as the chief threat to stability in the region, has been a brilliant, I repeat brilliant strategic coup that will go down in the history books of diplomatic and military prowess.

Point Two: Palestinian terrorists and radical Islamic terrorists have out-lived their usefullness from the point of view of the Arab elites, as witnessed by their resounding silence towards their extermination, or at most, mild and equivocal criticism of BOTH parties coming out of the Arab League and even out of European capitals (who largely echo Arab concerns).

Point Three: Whether the conflict proceeds immediately to the larger confrontation and neutering of Syria and Iran remains to be seen. Such a progression is desired by Western planners, it is part of any sane plan to reshape the post-WWII dynamic in the Middle East, but the enemies (and Liberals) will have to play their part...
